Walk down any supermarket aisle and you will find wax melts for under a pound. Ours cost more, and people quite reasonably ask why.
The honest answer comes down to two things: what the wax is made of, and how many of them we make at a time.
What Most Cheap Wax Melts Are Made Of
The vast majority of mass-produced wax melts are paraffin. Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining. It is cheap, it holds a lot of fragrance oil, and it is easy to work with at scale, which is exactly why it dominates the budget end of the market.
It also burns hot and fast. That is why a cheap melt hits you hard for the first twenty minutes and then gives you very little for the rest of the session.
Why We Use Soy
Soy wax is made from soybean oil. It is plant-based, renewable, and biodegradable, and it melts at a noticeably lower temperature than paraffin.
That lower melting point is the whole point. The fragrance is released gently and steadily rather than all at once, so instead of an intense burst followed by nothing, you get a consistent scent across the full 8-12 hours of a segment.
It is a slower, softer way of scenting a room. Less like walking past a perfume counter, more like the smell of something in the oven.
Soy Is Not Automatically Better at Everything
We should be straight about the trade-offs, because plenty of brands are not.
Paraffin genuinely does throw a stronger initial scent. If what you want is to walk into a room and be hit immediately, paraffin does that better. Soy takes longer to build, and it rewards a bit of patience.
Soy is also less forgiving to work with. It is fussy about pour temperature, it can develop a frosted, slightly crystalline surface as it sets, and colour can vary between batches. None of that affects performance, but it does mean more waste and slower production. Some of that cost ends up in the price.
What soy does give you is a cleaner burn, a plant-based product rather than a petroleum one, and a fragrance that is still there two hours in.
What Hand-Poured Actually Means
"Hand-poured" gets used loosely, so here is what it means for us specifically.
Every batch is melted, scented, coloured and poured by hand, in quantities small enough that one person manages the whole process. Each piece is then set, trimmed, checked and packaged individually.
It means we notice when a batch is not right, because we are looking at every single one. It also means slight variations between batches in colour and finish, which we would rather explain than pretend does not happen.
A factory producing tens of thousands of identical melts a day cannot do the first thing. But it also never has the second problem.
Why Small Batches Change the Fragrance
There is a practical reason small batches matter beyond craft credentials.
Fragrance oil degrades over time. A melt that has spent eight months in a warehouse, then three months on a shelf, has lost a meaningful amount of its scent before anyone has even bought it.
Because we make in small quantities and dispatch within a few days, what reaches you is usually only a few weeks old. That is the single biggest reason a hand-poured melt tends to outperform a mass-produced one, and it has nothing to do with the wax at all.
Vegan and Cruelty Free
Soy wax is plant-based, so our products are suitable for vegans. We do not test on animals, and we do not work with suppliers who do.
Worth noting separately: fragrance itself can affect pets. Cats and birds are particularly sensitive to strong scent, regardless of what the wax is made from. Use melts in a well-ventilated room and let animals move away if they want to.
Is It Worth Paying More?
If you want maximum scent for minimum money, supermarket paraffin will do that, and we would not pretend otherwise.
What you are paying for with a hand-poured soy melt is a longer, more even fragrance, a plant-based product, and something made recently by someone who checked it. Whether that is worth the difference is genuinely a matter of what you want from it.
